500,000 businesses fail to achieve potential because of a lack of support for unpaid carers

Because of caring responsibilities that entrepreneurs have no support around, half a million small businesses fail to achieve growth and job creation potential.

ISBE member Adrian Ashton was asked to lead 2 national round tables as part of Carers Week 2023, exploring the relaties and impacts that becoming an unpaid carer has on entrepreneurs and small business owners – the outcomes of these challenge ‘accepted wisdom’ about why unpaid carers may be more likely to be freelancers, and highlighted how a lack of specialist business support to small enterprises whose owners become unpaid carers suggests a need for policy intervention to better sustain and enable wider economic growth.
