Submission deadline for Chapter proposal (2-3 pages): 15th December 2020

ver the years, the interest in STEM entrepreneurial activities has been increasing worldwide mainly because they are associated with a country’s level of innovation and competitiveness, social and economic growth, thus to the overall level of well-being of society.

Within this scenario, the most recent data from OECD clearly point out a low involvement of women in STEM, first of all in terms of education, which inevitably affects the percentage of women entrepreneurs in these fields. Despite the paucity of data, the available information show, indeed, that in the US and in Europe at most 15% of high-tech business is owned by women (US Department of Commerce, 2017; Marlow and McAdam, 2011). However, women led firms in STEM are considered crucial either for the countries’ socio-economic growth, being sources of occupations and innovation (OECD, 2018), or for younger women, acting as mentors and role models.

By stimulating scholars’ reflections on women entrepreneurial propensity and on women entrepreneurship in STEM fields, this book aims at contributing to the emerging conversation on this issue, bringing together both global and country-specific evidences able to offering a new and insightful addition to the women entrepreneurship research conversation.

In particular, we propose (but not limit) three particular broad areas that deserve research attention:

  1. Women entrepreneurs in STEM fields
  2. Academic women entrepreneurs in STEM fields
  3. Women entrepreneurial propensity in STEM fields
