DEPARTMENT/SCHOOL: Careers and Employability Service (seconded from Buckingham Enterprise and Innovation Unit)
JOB TITLE:  Enterprise Project Officer
SALARY:  £23,799 – £28,000 depending on experience
HOURS: Full time (35 hours per week), 12-months fixed term

The University of Buckingham is among the fifteen smallest in the UK and is rightly proud of its distinctive features, namely: it is the only private University in the UK with a Royal Charter; secondly, it pioneered the first accelerated (two-year) degree; and finally, it provides students with a personalised learning experience through its small-group academic tutorial system and exceptional pastoral care provision.

The University of Buckingham’s Careers and Employability Service, in partnership with the BEIU (Buckingham Enterprise and Innovation Unit www.beiu.co.uk), is seeking a proactive and self-motivated Enterprise Project Officer to set up and manage an exciting new placement scheme delivering entre- and intrapreneurial opportunities for students.

This is a full-time role, initially employed on a 12-month fixed term contract and based at the University’s Buckingham campus (although some remote working might be required at first).

The successful applicant will be pivotal in ensuring a successful launch and first year of operation of the university’s new ‘B Enterprising’ scheme. This scheme will provide students with short (approximately 30 hours) paid work placements and consultancy projects with an entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial focus. These will be available on a rolling basis throughout term-time and holiday periods. The payment received by participating students will come from a central fund rather than from the employers for which the students undertake work.

This is an exciting opportunity to take on a new and varied role which encompasses employer engagement, selection and support of participating students and day-to-day operation of the B Enterprising scheme. You will find and attract suitable employers (start-ups and SMEs) to participate in the scheme, drawing on the existing business contacts of colleagues in the BEIU and the Careers team, as well as generating your own new contacts. You will ensure that the opportunities created by employers are of appropriate scope and size and that the participating students understand what is expected of them. You will promote the benefits of participating in the scheme to students across the university, championing championing the value of gaining enterprising skills and experience; you will manage the process of selecting students and will support them before and during the placements/projects so that students engage appropriately and represent the university positively to employers.

Our aim is for at least 100 students to participate in the B Enterprising scheme during the first 12 months. Many of the projects may be completed by small groups of students working collaboratively.

The successful applicant will ideally be qualified to degree level, have experience working in the HE (or related) sector in an employer engagement role and/or a work placement management role. You will be an enthusiastic networker and team player who is able to operate independently and proactively. See the Job Profile for further details of the key responsibilities and person specification.

Informal enquiries about the role may be made to Beth Baker, Head of Careers, Employability and Alumni Relations (beth.baker@buckingham.ac.uk), or Professor Nigel Adams, Director, Buckingham Enterprise and Innovation Unit (nigel.adams@buckingham.ac.uk).

The closing date for applications is Friday 9th April 2021.
