The Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE) and Nottingham University Business School, University of Nottingham, are delighted to jointly invite you to the inaugural ISBE ECR/ECA Spring symposium which aims to assist early career researchers in relation to career development by both developing their current research for publication and their broader understanding of the requirements of academic careers in the contemporary job market.

This one-day developmental symposium will offer Early Career Academics and ECRs, including PhD students and post-doctoral researchers, the opportunity to present papers to a supportive audience of their peers and senior academics. In addition to sharing developmental research ideas that they wish to finesse to inform future conference papers and article submissions, they can also, discuss their concerns regarding how to effectively present their work to gain feedback that informs such future efforts.  Thus, we are inviting ECA/ECRs to present draft work to gain supportive critical evaluation to improve the quality of their final manuscripts. Symposium attendees will also be able to receive feedback and advice on presentation skills, how to manage a critical audience, responding to difficult questions, how to write a successful abstract and hints on converting conference papers to journal articles from experienced journal editors and reviewers.

In addition to ECA/ECR presentations, there will be a number of experienced academics who will share their experiences and expertise on developing and presenting papers and who will also attend and comment upon the presentations. The aim of this developmental symposium is to offer a relaxed, supportive environment where ECAs/ECRs can feel confident expressing emergent ideas and engage in debate whilst learning from and sharing with their colleagues.

There will also be panel discussion of the academic job market and academic careers with discussion on how to develop a publication strategy and position your research for potential employers and career progression. This will include a session focussed upon ‘engaged scholarship’ as a means of responding to the increasing requirement for academics to contribute to knowledge exchange and/or research impact, in addition to a session on using social media to establish your academic brand.

Given the lack of networking opportunities available over the past two years, we have included a relaxed networking session at the end of the day and can facilitate a networking dinner on the preceding evening for those travelling in advance, subject to demand and prevailing Covid restrictions.

You are invited to submit short papers (3,000-5,000 words) based upon their finished research or work in progress. We welcome conceptual and empirical submissions (qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods) that seek to advance understanding in relation to any aspect of small business and entrepreneurship. Submissions should introduce the topic, offer a short critical evaluation of relevant literatures, provide a methodological justification, outline methods, key findings and conclude by outlining the theoretical contribution and any implications for policy or practice.

Please submit your short paper to before the deadline.

Deadline for applications: March 17th at 5pm.

COST:

For ISBE Members (including those at Institutional Member organisations):  FREE
