New Approaches to Raising Entrepreneurial Opportunity:  Reshaping   inclusive Enterprise, Policy, and Practice Post-Pandemic

“Diversity is the success of so many businesses.”
Lord Karan Bilimoria

The UK Chancellor of the Exchequer has warned of permanent scarring of the economy due to business collapse in the wake of Covid-19 with, perhaps, the greatest risks faced by SMEs and microbusinesses.  There were almost six million micro and small businesses in the UK at the start of 2019 (Office for National Statistics). They comprised 99% of all firms and accounted for almost half of private sector employment (13.2 million people) as well as 40% of its turnover (£1.5 trillion). With fewer resources and reserves than larger businesses, many of the owners and managers of these firms are currently facing the biggest challenges of their lives. Survival is the paramount objective. This year the ISBE conference theme, New Approaches to Raising Entrepreneurial Opportunity:  Reshaping Inclusive Enterprise, Policy and Practice Post-Pandemic is a timely and important challenge to exploring inequalities, levelling-up and the importance of place, in addressing the pressing social and economic demands on SMEs and micro businesses. The conference welcomes contributions which address inequality, sustainability, digital, future opportunities, new models of engagement that advance our understanding of inclusive practice, and practitioner-based approaches to growth and innovation.

The ISBE conference has never been more important. The ensuing challenges from the Covid-19 pandemic mean improving and providing equal access to entrepreneurial opportunities is ever more critical; the principles of diversity and inclusive growth are linked to economic recovery, regeneration, innovation and collaboration in local economies. The ISBE 2022 conference in the beautiful city of York, with a tradition of entrepreneurial leadership and success reaching back over many centuries, will provide an opportunity to discuss new leading-edge research and knowledge exchange initiatives. These will inform inclusive enterprise, policy and practice and support SMEs and micro businesses to rethink critically entrepreneurial opportunity and entrepreneurial spaces for the future.
