Abstract
Cities are emptying out as a result of Covid-19 restrictions and demand for rural living continues to grow. In this context, we invite you to join our guest speakers to debate the potential for rural entrepreneurship to become a major driver of economic recovery post-Covid. In order to inform policy and research, we must identify the new business models, technologies and networks that offer most promise for a rural economic renaissance.
Rural areas are diverse, offering distinctive affordances to entrepreneurs linked to their natural environments, social cohesion and digital connectivity. There are also high levels of human capital and skills in rural areas, although to date these have been associated with out-commuting due to a lack of opportunities in rural labour markets. If these people become more embedded in their localities, as a response to both digital working practices and environmental pressures to reduce travel, can this fuel a rural renaissance replete with new entrepreneurial opportunities?
Addressing this question, Prof. Steffen Korsgaard and Dr Lucio Pato will each consider the types of rural entrepreneurs that are most likely to drive growth in different European contexts. This will raise questions about the changing roles and definitions of “rural entrepreneurs” and the dynamics of social, economic and technological change that will create new entrepreneurial opportunities and reshape network configurations.
